What Tools You Actually Need as an Apprentice
The best tool you can bring to your first day on site is a great attitude. 🧠
First Things First: Mindset is Everything
You’re the new kid on site. Some people might treat you unfairly or try to give you a hard time — unfortunately, it’s still part of the culture in some pockets of the industry to "test" the apprentice.
In those situations, remember to have thick skin and don’t take it personally. But if it crosses the line — if it’s constant or clearly abusive — that could be considered workplace bullying. Don’t stay silent. Speak with your boss or supervisor. Good employers will step in and put a stop to it.
What Tools Do You Actually Need on Day One?
What you need will depend entirely on your trade and what expectations your employer has set. But no matter the trade, it’s always a good idea to rock up with basic hand tools.
We know it’s tough financially to get your kit sorted early on. But if you can, invest in the best-quality tools you can afford. Quality gear lasts, and in this industry, miles matter. Brands like:
✅ Makita
✅ DeWalt
✅ Milwaukee
✅ Stanley
✅ Snap-on
...and other trade-specific brands are worth the coin.
Tax Tip: Tools Under $300 Are Deductible
If you're smart about how you buy tools, you can get a win at tax time.
Any tool under $300 (inc. GST) is fully tax-deductible in the year you buy it
You can buy as many tools as you like under the $300 threshold and still claim them all
Just keep your receipts and talk to an accountant who knows the trade game.
$1,000 Tool Boost for Priority Trades
If you’re in a priority trade (as recognised by the Australian Government), you’ll be eligible for a $1,000 payment to help cover the cost of tools.
This usually kicks in within your first 6–12 months. Ask your employer or training provider to help you apply through your Apprenticeship Network Provider (like MEGT or BUSY At Work).
Start Small and Build Smart
The best tools to start with are basic hand tools specific to your trade — and build your kit over time.
Some full trade kits can be worth $5K to $100K+, depending on the trade. But don’t stress — it doesn’t all happen at once.
