Thief jumps into car with child inside and a hero tradie doesn’t think twice

A moment of distraction, a thief jumping into a car… and an 8 year old girl trapped in the back seat. What could have ended in tragedy on a quiet street in Brisbane took a very different turn when a tradie heard the screams, dropped his shovel without thinking and reacted before anyone else could.

Meet Wayne, the tradie who didn’t hesitate when a child was in danger.

It was mid afternoon in Wilston, a quiet Brisbane suburb, when everything spun out of control in seconds. A man wearing a dark hoodie pulled over his head jumped into a parked vehicle on Antill Street trying to steal it without a second thought. What this rat apparently did not expect was that an eight year old girl was sitting in the back seat.

When the stranger climbed into the car, the girl began screaming in panic that she was in danger. Her cries carried across the street to a nearby site where tradie Wayne Mepham was working. Within seconds he reacted and became the hero of the moment. When someone is in danger, you move.

The moment a tradie shuts down the crime

As the suspect tried to start the car, Mepham crossed the street and moved straight toward the vehicle after hearing the girl calling for help. That moment changed everything. The girl’s father also appeared on scene and the brazen thief, suddenly confronted by two adults running toward him, decided to abandon the vehicle and bolt.

The intervention was fast, instinctive and completely improvised, but it was enough to stop the attempted theft before the car could move with an eight year old child inside.

Sometimes the difference between a scare and a tragedy is someone running toward the problem.

From attempted theft to a chase through the suburb

The story did not end when the thief jumped out of the vehicle. Both Mepham and the girl’s father took off after him, chasing him through nearby streets while the man, now clearly rattled, tried to escape.

The pursuit continued toward a nearby 7 Eleven, where the man crossed a busy road and managed to disappear before they could grab him. By that point several neighbours had already witnessed part of the chaos that had shaken the normally quiet suburban street.

A whole suburb on alert

Police arrived shortly after and launched a search in the area while gathering witness statements. The incident caused enough concern that a nearby school was briefly placed into lockdown while officers tried to track the suspect down.

Although the man managed to escape, the outcome could have been very different if no one had reacted when the girl started screaming. In the middle of all that, a tradie who was simply working across the street ended up being the first person to run toward danger when someone needed help, becoming the hero of the story without trying to be one. Sometimes basic human instinct is enough.
